Synergies as a tool for Knowledge Valorisation in Widening Countries
Synergies are a central element of the widerAdvance Facility. They enable Horizon Europe beneficiaries to connect their research results to follow-up investment opportunities, complementary EU programmes, regional policies and innovation ecosystems - ultimately ensuring the excellent research delivers long-term impact in widening countries and Outermost Regions.
-
What are Synergies?
Synergies are understood as the strategic combination of different funding sources, policies and support instruments in order to enhance the dissemination, exploitation and valorisation of research results.
Within WiderAdvance, synergies focus on:
-
connecting results of EU-funded projects with follow-up funding and investments,
-
aligning project outcomes with regional, national and European policy priorities,
-
strengthening innovation ecosystems and institutional capacities in Widening countries and Outermost Regions.
Synergies within WP3 of WiderAdvance
Synergy activities are implemented under Work Package 3 (WP3) and are structured around four complementary tasks. Together, they provide analytical, practical and capacity-building support for beneficiaries and regions.
Tasks at a glance:
Mapping & Funding Opportunities
This task focuses on identifying and mapping follow-up funding opportunities and investment pathways that can support the continuation and scaling-up of project results after the end of EU funding.
Activities include:
-
mapping relevant EU, national and regional funding programmes,
-
analysing opportunities for combining different funding instruments,
-
collecting best practices on successful funding pathways.
Key output:
Mapping of funding opportunities and a Funding Matrix supporting beneficiaries in identifying next-step financing options.
D&E Policies and Regional Assessment
This task supports regions and policymakers in assessing how effectively their frameworks enable dissemination, exploitation and knowledge valorisation (D&E).
A Regional D&E Self-Assessment Tool is developed to:
-
analyse existing regional D&E policies and support measures,
-
identify strengths, gaps and areas for improvement,
-
provide evidence-based recommendations for policy development.
Key output:
Regional D&E Self-Assessment Tool and policy recommendations.
Coaching Activities and Synergy Ambassadors
This task provides hands-on support to beneficiaries and regions through tailored coaching activities and a network of Synergy Ambassadors.
Activities include:
-
coaching sessions supporting the combination of EU, national and regional instruments,
-
guidance on funding strategies and exploitation pathways,
-
involvement of Synergy Ambassadors acting as national or regional contact points.
Key output:
Coaching framework and dedicated support through Synergy Ambassadors.
Mutual Learning Activities
This task focuses on mutual learning and exchange of experiences related to synergies and knowledge valorisation.
Activities include:
-
identification and analysis of successful synergy cases,
-
organisation of mutual learning events and workshops,
-
sharing lessons learned and practical recommendations.
Key output:
Collection of synergy success stories and outcomes of mutual learning activities.
Who can benefit from Synergies?
Synergy activities address:
-
beneficiaries of EU-funded research and innovation projects,
-
research managers and innovation support professionals,
-
regional and national policymakers involved in R&I and knowledge valorisation.
Engage with Synergies
Synergies are designed as a practical support mechanism, helping stakeholders move from project results to sustainable impact.
Beneficiaries and regions can:
-
explore follow-up funding and investment opportunities,
-
assess and strengthen regional D&E frameworks,
-
receive coaching and expert guidance,
-
participate in mutual learning and knowledge exchange.
