The Advances in Biomedical Research Symposium (ABRE2025) took place from July 21 to 23, 2025, in the historic city of La Laguna, Tenerife. This three-day event brought together leading researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss breakthroughs in theranostics, cancer therapies, antimicrobial research, and strategies against multidrug-resistant pathogens. With both on-site and online participation, ABRE2025 provided a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration across borders.
A Stage for the widerAdvance Facility
This year’s symposium was particularly significant for the widerAdvance Facility project, which was highlighted during several sessions. The project’s mission to strengthen research infrastructure, foster industry-academia partnerships, and promote the valorization of research results resonated strongly with the audience at ABRE.
Closure Lecture – The widerAdvance Facility Project
The final plenary session was dedicated to presenting the achievements and future directions of the project. It showcased how widerAdvance enables access to state-of-the-art research facilities and supports the translation of scientific outcomes into tangible innovations. The lecture emphasized the role of widerAdvance as a bridge connecting research excellence with industrial impact.
EU Valorisation Webinar (July 24)
This online session explored the importance of research valorization within the European framework. WiderAdvance was presented as an example of how EU-funded initiatives can accelerate the journey from laboratory to market. The discussion addressed challenges related to intellectual property management, technology transfer, and fostering entrepreneurial mindsets among researchers.
Key Contributions from Our Representatives
The widerAdvance presence at ABRE2025 was strengthened by two inspiring contributions:
- Katarzyna Walczyk-Matuszyk (Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland), the project coordinator, delivered an insightful presentation highlighting the strategic importance of widerAdvance for Europe’s innovation ecosystem. She illustrated how the project supports cross-border collaborations and facilitates access to cutting-edge infrastructure for both academic and industrial stakeholders.
- Ian Gauci-Borda (XjenzaMalta), representing one of our partners, shared Malta’s perspective on international cooperation. His talk underscored the value of networking and the collective strength of European research initiatives in addressing global biomedical challenges.
Engagement and Feedback – Insights from Participants
An interactive Mentimeter session, gathered valuable feedback from attendees. The results reflected a strong interest in:
- expanding opportunities for transnational collaboration,
- improving access to advanced research facilities, and
- enhancing mechanisms for the commercialization of research outcomes.
These insights reaffirm the relevance of widerAdvance’s mission and provide guidance for its future development.
Looking Ahead
ABRE2025 was more than just a symposium; it was a celebration of scientific excellence and a testament to the power of collaboration. For the widerAdvance Facility, the event reinforced its position as a catalyst for innovation in biomedical research. The positive reception of our project presentations and the dynamic discussions with participants have set the stage for stronger partnerships in the future.
